Brian's Story: How A Bowhunter Built A Jerky Brand And A Bible Community
What if the thing you do for fun is the door to your calling? We sit down with Brian, a bowhunter-turned-barbecue craftsman, whose $169 smoker and five months of relentless jerky experiments led to a nationwide business—and then to something even bigger: a daily, live Scripture practice that thousands now join on TikTok as Read the Bible with Pawpaw.
Brian walks us through the winding road from Silas, Alabama to a USDA facility in Mississippi, and the mentors who sharpened his craft. Then he takes us to a sunrise moment that changed his life: a clear, personal call to be an evangelist—not by title, but by action. That call became a simple routine with surprising reach: show up at 6:30 a.m. Central, read the Word without labels, and trust God to do the heart work. We talk consistency, handling trolls, adding moderators, and why opinion can only motivate while Scripture transforms. You’ll hear how Psalm 91 steadies anxious minds, how Psalm 34 restores joy, and how speaking God’s promises becomes real spiritual warfare against shame and intimidation.
This conversation is a blueprint for purpose in the digital age. Whether you’re a cook, electrician, or coder, excellence can open doors that sermons can’t. Brian shares how a small, faithful practice sparked a growing community of readers and a 13‑week Rooted discipleship rhythm. If you’re restless or unsure where to begin, you’ll find practical steps to start where you are, use what you have, and let truth be your shield and buckler. Join us for a story that blends barbecue smoke, Scripture, and everyday courage—and leave ready to turn your skill into service, your routine into witness, and your platform into purpose.
If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs hope today, and leave a review to help more people find real stories, real struggles, and real hope.

It's time now to get the hell out of your life. A weekly broadcast with real people, sharing real struggles, and offering real hope. Today's show will encourage, inspire, and empower you to face life's challenges with a bold confidence and renewed hope. Now let's join our host, Ron Myers, the promoter.
Brian Ducharm:Well, I am originally from Alabama. Uh if you know where Waynesboro, Mississippi is, if you're coming from the coast, you cut straight across the state line there and you can go about 20 minutes and slam on brakes, and you're in downtown Silas, Alabama. You might not know that's where you are, but that's where you are, and that's where I'm from. Silas, Gilbertown, Choctaw County.
Ron Meyers:And you were in the Air Force.
Brian Ducharm:Joined the Air Force to see the world and got two hours from home. Went from Silas and Gilbertown to uh Keesler Air Force Base here in Biloxi.
Ron Meyers:So how did you get into cooking, whether it'd be beef jerky, seasoning? How did you get into that?
Brian Ducharm:You know, I'm a bow hunter. I love to hunt. And my cousin by marriage would make jerky. And he would dehydrate it on these little round dehydrators that you see at Walmart or whatever. And so he introduced me to making jerky 10 or 12 years ago. And so back then I had a company where we were had a medical oxygen company, and I would make jerky and give it to doctors and nurses and hospice administrators. You know, it was kind of our little marketing thing, right? And so, anyway, I sold that company and I bought myself a little smoker. I told them, I'm gonna teach myself barbecue. I always wanted to learn how to barbecue. So I'm doing that, doing ribs, doing chicken wings, that kind of thing. And I decided one day, instead of dehydrating jerky, I was gonna smoke some. So I smoked some jerky, and to me it was 10 times better smoke than it was dehydrated. And Ron, it became an obsession. I smoked jerky around the clock for five months working on my marinades, you know, my seasonings and that kind of thing.
Ron Meyers:And now this has turned into a business for you, right?
Brian Ducharm:Yeah, we've shipped jerky to all 50 states, man. We uh, you know, it started with a $169 Cajun injector smoker on our back porch, and now we're partners in a USDA facility in Pickyune, Mississippi. So we've we've gone the whole gamut, you know.
Ron Meyers:So that's one of your talents that uh God has given you. Do you give God the credit for all your knowledge of cooking?
Brian Ducharm:Oh man, the Lord has put so many people in my path. You know, we were talking earlier about Terry Welch. He was a barbecue mentor to me. He's probably if I had to think it up, but I think I'm probably friends with five world champions when it comes to barbecue, you know. So yeah, God's definitely put a lot of people in my path that's helped me along the way.
Ron Meyers:And that's a great thing to kind of segue into a conversation with someone. You're giving them jerky, and I would imagine, like me, a lot of times, God becomes part of the subject.
Brian Ducharm:Yeah, as you're out and about, man. And you know, especially if you develop a talent that people recognize, oftentimes, and I would tell anybody listening, that's your platform right there, man. Isn't there a verse in the Bible that says something about a man who is really skilled will go before kings? So, man, develop a skill skill. The Lord will use that in your life. It could be anything from beef jerky. Like I did if you'd asked me when I graduated high school, uh, what are you gonna do when you grow up, it wouldn't have been owned a beef jerky company. I can tell you that. You know, Lord. But the Lord gives you different talents. I mean, you might be the elect best electrician around. Yeah, I don't know, but God will open doors if you hone a skill, he will definitely use that.
Ron Meyers:Well, absolutely. And now I want to talk a little bit about your social media platform. You have something very unique. You have something called Read the Bible with Pawpaw.
Brian Ducharm:That's right.
Ron Meyers:Uh, and it's on TikTok and YouTube. What is Read the Bible with Pawpaw?
Brian Ducharm:Well, I tell you what, this started July 1st, 2024 on TikTok. And I had come in, I have another channel on TikTok. It's called Smokehouse by You. And there's probably, you know, 500 videos on how to cook this, how to smoke that, that kind of thing. Well, I'd walked into what we call headquarters on the 1st of July, 2024, and the Lord, I knew, man, Ron, it was like he told me in one second what he wanted me to do. There was no question, right? It was you're gonna start a channel called Read the Bible, Paw Paul. I want you to read two or three minute segments of the Word. I'll tell you what to do, right? And so I started that day. And I would do one, sometimes up to three videos a day. If I missed a day, it was very rare. It was mo mainly every day. I put out videos for quite a while, and you know, the the growth of the channel went, I think over the next five to six months, it grew to maybe 1,200 followers, right? Very niche kind of thing. You know, you either want to hear the Bible or you don't, you know, that kind of thing. And so anyway, after the first of the year, though, you know, they were going to shut TikTok down. You remember if you remember that, you know, so they actually shut it down for maybe 12 hours or something like that. Renee said to me when it came back up, Brian, TikTok's back up. So I did a video, like I was probably one of the first people that put a video up on TikTok statistically, anyway. I'm sure there was thousands that went up, but I got like 900 followers in a day. Boom. Just like that.
Ron Meyers:Reading the Bible with pawpaw.
Brian Ducharm:Reading the Bible with Pawpaw, right? And so I was like, man, this is really cool. And so, you know, that's that's always exciting. Although I don't do this to gain followers, it's not that. I I tell people I'm gonna do this whether there's just me and you in here, you know.
Ron Meyers:You just want to share the word.
Brian Ducharm:I just want to share the word, right? And so after after that, it was like January 6th of last year, felt like the Lord told me, I want you to go live, read the Bible live. And I'm like, okay. It was very awkward, Ron, at first, you know, because I would read and then somebody would come in.
Ron Meyers:Are you on film too? Are you seeing your face?
Brian Ducharm:Yeah, yeah, they see your face, man. You're interacting with people, you know.
Ron Meyers:So you become a a celebrity on TikTok.
Brian Ducharm:Well, you start reading like that very first time I was reading, and and you'll have trolls come in, if you will. You know, they have a they call them trolls, people that are just they're just out to give you a hard time, so to speak, right? And so, yeah, I had to had to get my feet wet and muddle through that and and but the the audience started growing because I decided I'm gonna lock down a time slot and be consistent. So Monday through Friday, 6 30 central time, I would get on and read the Bible. Well, it wasn't uncommon. I'd start getting a hundred followers a day, you know? And so we we did this for I've done this for almost exactly one year as a live. Before it was doing videos, but now it's it's a live and on TikTok. And anyway, we're very close to thirty thousand followers now, and it's not uncommon to do a live in the mornings and average, you know, six five to six hundred people that come in there and and do Bible with me, you know. Let me just read them the word and share with them.
Ron Meyers:Well, and part of the reason I do this show and interview people like you, my guest, is you're not a preacher, are you? You didn't go to seminary. And it's to let people know that when God puts something in our hearts to do part of our purpose that He will make sure everything falls into place. Was everything falling in place and now you've grown? Have you had feedback?
Brian Ducharm:Well, let me share with you, let me step back just a minute because you're exactly right. I don't I didn't go to seminary, I don't have a degree in ministry or anything like that, a background in ministry.
Ron Meyers:You just have a love for the Lord.
Brian Ducharm:Man, look, I I'll just I'll I'll tell you this. I grew up and I had the ability to charm my way through life. Deceiver, okay? I'm a deceiver. I was a deceiver, I should say. I was somebody that, you know, looked good on the outside kind of thing. And so about five years ago, I'm living for myself. You know, if you knew me, you would say, Oh, that's a nice guy, right? But I'm living for myself, and a friend of mine named Troy, we were talking about him earlier, invited me to a sunrise resurrection service at this golf course. I love to play golf, you know. And so I said, Okay, I'll go. So there's six six o'clock in the morning. I lean up against the back of the clubhouse, watching Guy German and his his family sing, and I lean up against the back of the clubhouse, and I'm about 49 at the time, 53 now. The Lord spoke to me and he said, The last part you're about to be 50. The last part of your life's not gonna be anything like the first part of your life. You're an evangelist. And I'm telling just like I heard it in my head, just like me and you were talking. So I go home and I'm contemplating this because I'm not living for the Lord at this point. I'm living for Brian, you know. And I say something to my dad, who is one of the most spiritual men I know, and I said, Dad, I know what an evangelist is, but what do you think? Am I gonna go into the I mean am I gonna go into the ministry? Am I gonna be on the church staff? What is he saying? And uh my dad says, I tell you what he's saying, baby. He's saying, take one day at a time. That's what he's saying. And so I did that, and I started slowly, it wasn't like a snap of the finger, and all of a sudden I'm completely serving the Lord, but the Lord started putting people in my life, and I gradually changed over time. And then when I walked into work that day, and the Lord said, You got I've got an assignment for you. It's called Read the Bible with Paw Paw, and he told me exactly what he wanted me to do all within a second, then my whole life changed. And I became because it wasn't just Brian was reading the word for others, it changed me. Those every day, getting in the word every single day. That's what I would encourage anybody in here, whether you do a TikTok live or you share the you're in the ministry, whatever, if you're never in the ministry, read the word every day because God's word has power in it. And I tell people on my live, I can get on here and read two verses and give you 40 minutes of my opinion. Okay. And it'll get you about that far down the road. It'll inspire you. But if I get on here and I share God's word and it penetrates your heart, it'll change your life. God's word will change your life. My opinion won't, it might change your mind for a minute, but God's word will change your life, you know?
Ron Meyers:Amen. So um are you having fun?
Brian Ducharm:Heck yeah.
Ron Meyers:Heck yeah.
Brian Ducharm:Ron, this thing has grown from now. I know that there's people in other countries that have listened to read the Bible Paw Paw, because I get some of these stats, but mainly it's the United States, and but it is it's so fun sometimes because it's all interactive, right? When I'm doing this, people are commenting and all type, you know, and it's grown to where I probably have about seven or eight moderators. I have to. It would be chaos if I didn't because so many things. But we do two things in there. Three things, three or four things happen, but we do two things. We read the word. And I tell people all the time, I'm reading the Bible. I'm not trying to turn you into a Baptist, an Episcopalian, a Methodist, a Catholic. No. I'm just reading the word and let God's word speak for itself. The Lord doesn't need this little old sawed-off country boy's commentary, right? He just wants his word spoken. And in Isaiah 55, it says his word will not return void. It is powerful.
Ron Meyers:And I've always subscribed to the belief with Jesus that if we turn it over to him and we're obedient to what he's called us to do and our purpose, we don't have to worry about the people that hear what we do because then it becomes his responsibility to do what he needs to do in their life.
Brian Ducharm:That's right.
Ron Meyers:But each of us, and there are listeners right now, Brian, that feel that they need to be doing something for God. They have a hunger for God. God has touched them, but they do not know where to begin. They don't have the maybe the courage or they don't know what to do.
Brian Ducharm:What would you tell that person? Well, I encourage people now in the platform that I'm on on TikTok, is I'll tell them, you don't have to be a Bible teacher, but can you read God's word? Do you have a love for God's word? And one of the things, Ron, that I'm so excited about is it started with me reading. Now there's other people that do ministry on TikTok. I'm not, you know, exclusive that, but it started, this whole community started with me reading the word. And then after a while, I start encouraging people, can you read the word? And it has grown to like 25 people now are on TikTok in our little TikTok community, if you will, that get on at different times of the day, different times of the week, and read the word. We also have a program called Rooted, which is a discipleship that they there's like four guys, uh a gal and or excuse me, four people mixed that uh they do a discipleship every Saturday. So they have a subject and people come in through like a 13-week program. So it's just kind of grown beyond me, you know.
Ron Meyers:And what I find so fascinating, Brian, hearing your story, I've always said, like I buy time on non-Christian radio that we've got to start, people've got to start thinking outside the box. We can do a church, we can talk about Jesus outside of a building. People ask me where my church is, and I said, Well, Walmart, Car Wars, the radio, the podcast.Anywhere I go, if I can breathe and brag on Jesus, that's really what this podcast is about. Bragging on Jesus. He wants each of us to walk in to our purpose and our destiny. Because I would ask you, Brian, if you did not become you and did not be obedient to do and read the Bible with Paw Paw, who would? No one. That void, you have something that no one else has. I'm doing something no one else is doing. Somebody listening has something the Lord wants to promote, wants to encourage and inspire them. Don't give up. Just because the world sometimes tells us no, Jesus' promises are yes and amen. That's right. So give a little pep talk to someone out there that's sitting on the fence.
Brian Ducharm:Look, man, John 15, he says, I'm the vine, you're the branch, right? All life, all uh adequacy, everything, sustenance, resource comes from him. You know, we talk about this a lot. You don't need a healing, you need the healer to show up, right? You don't need a resource, you need the provider to show up. When the provider shows up, everything is handled, right? Well, if you're a Christian and you're out there and you want, man, look, the platforms that are available now to share the gospel, it's just amazing, right? All this social media, and it's just a tool. You can use it for good or bad, right? You can use it for good or bad. There's plenty of podcasts out there today that they're not honoring the Lord, but here comes Ron, he's got a podcast that's honoring the Lord, right? It's just a tool.
Ron Meyers:So Well, I I tell people this, Brian, that if you're restless out there, folks, and you have no understanding why you're restless, that might be the Holy Spirit nudging you into something that God wants you to do. People ask, Ron, how long are you going to do this podcast? Until I feel the Lord is telling me not to. But Brian, if I didn't have a way to release my faith, share stories with you and other guests, I'd be like that little tea kettle sitting on a back burner. I'd eventually just explode.
Brian Ducharm:Right.
Ron Meyers:I've got to get this out. And when we get Jesus in us, Jesus comes out in different ways and purposes and and things that each of us have. So right now, there's someone sitting, maybe they're driving, they're all alone, they're a little fearful about life, maybe they lost somebody, maybe they had a bad medical report. They're becoming a little kind of pessimistic about the future. You can encourage them. What would you tell that one person that's having a tough time right now in life?
Brian Ducharm:Man, okay. I I I really revert back to my opinion will get you this far down the road, but when the when the word gets in you, right? And Psalm 91, I would encourage every person reading or listening, excuse me, to this podcast to read Psalm 91 every day. Every single day. He said, He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide in the shadow of the Almighty. It starts talking about proximity. You've got to be close to the Lord, right? Well, how we were talking earlier, how much closer can he be when he lives inside of you? Amen, brother. Right? But we we give our attentions to what we give our attentions to. And you're either giving your attentions to the Lord or you're giving your attention to something else.
Ron Meyers:You know, I often ask people if I'm speaking, I'll hold an apple up, and I said, now if I squeeze this apple, what will I get? And people say, Well, apple juice. Well, if I squeeze this orange, what will I get? Orange juice. Well, we as believers, when we get squeezed, what comes out? That's right. See, we want Jesus to come out because that will give us the peace that surpasses all understanding. We want some wisdom how to solve that problem in front of us. But a lot of times, if we're not grounded, like you said, in the word or the promises of Jesus, when we get squeezed, what comes out is, oh, maybe he's punishing me. Maybe he doesn't like me. Maybe he's grounded me for a month because I didn't do something. No, God wants you to get to know him more. It's a relationship, just like we have with our families, our wives, our business partner. Jesus is a relationship. The word helps grow that relationship because, like you said, the word is truth and it's powerful.
Brian Ducharm:Powerful. Wow. If you're not getting the word in you, I mean, think about it this way Jesus is the word. In the beginning was the word. The word was with God, the word was God, and the word became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus is the word. And in Psalm 91, it says, His truth is your shield and your buckler, right?
Ron Meyers:Well, and the one thing with you as you see this. World on the news, or you hear about things, how are you gonna have hope for this world if we don't have Jesus in us? Because otherwise, I tell people you'll hide under your bed, you'll go home and sit in a recliner and just watch I Love Lucy shows the rest of your life because you're afraid to leave the house. But when you see the troubles out there and hope begins to bubble up in us, we know that we don't have all the answers, but God has a plan. God has a plan for the world, God has a plan for these politicians, and God has a plan for each of the people listening to this.
Brian Ducharm:Well, if you look at the world, like you said, you look at the world today, you know, he says, His truth is your shield and your buckler. And right after that, he says, You will not be afraid of the terror by night or the arrow that flies by day. You won't be fearful of the pestilence that walks in darkness or the destruction that lays waste at noonday. Then he says, a thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it won't come near you. See, that all comes from Jesus being your shield and your buckler. You gotta be close to him. You gotta walk in his word, and then all that'll change. You know, the enemy wants to deceive you. If he can't deceive you, he'll distract you. If he can't distract you, he'll try to intimidate you, shame you, right? You know, that's why the enemy is the accuser of the bread. He's always coming to accuse. And I believe this there's one reason. He wants to keep your mouth shut. Because our spiritual warfare is our words. When we're declaring God's word, he's gone, man. If you submit yourself to God, resist the devil, he's gonna flee.
Ron Meyers:And I found out, and I wonder if you have, that the more I'm promoting and bragging about what Jesus wants to do, it's almost to me like the fountain of youth. I feel good, I look good. Yeah, I go out there, it's not me, but it's when you have that living word just manifesting in you and you're telling people about it. There's something about stress, it just melts off of you, and you are optimistic. You have hope, you have faith. You're ready to charge hell with a water pistol because you know that you can't do anything by yourself, but with God, it's amazing the things that we can do in life.
Brian Ducharm:You know, what you just described is in Psalm 34. So they looked to him and their faces were radiant, and there was no shame.
Ron Meyers:Amen.
Brian Ducharm:You know, they the Lord gets rid of shame. He walks with you, man. There is a few. And if you're walking and you're got your eyes on him, I'm telling you, the world will see it. They will. Yep.
Ron Meyers:Fix your eyes on Jesus, and the world is looking for something right now. They don't know what it is.
Brian Ducharm:Yeah.
Ron Meyers:But when they get around us, I tell people, we have this aroma, this aroma. Now, I'm not talking about body odor. I'm talking about the aroma of freedom, of life. And they'll ask me, I'm sure they do you, what do you do? How come you're always happy? How come you're glowing like that? What's going on? Well, I'm so glad you asked. Yeah. Let me tell you about myself.
Brian Ducharm:What does it say too? It says they boast in the Lord and the humble hear it and are glad. You know? And I've never run, I've never heard, I've never seen somebody boasting that wasn't running that mouth. Yeah. Right? But they were running that mouth about the Lord. Amen. And it says the humble hear it and are glad. I love that.
Ron Meyers:That's why I call myself the promoter. People say I'm promoting Jesus. I'm promoting destiny and purpose. And that, yes, there is a better day tomorrow, and it's never too late for a new beginning. And I hope you've been encouraged by listening to Pawpaw. Reading the Bible with Pawpaw. Now, it's heard every day. How can people find you on TikTok and what time do you do it?
Brian Ducharm:All right. So the channel is Read the Bible with Pawpaw, P-A-W-P-A-W. And we I have a live Monday through Friday, 6 30 a.m. Central Time, and it goes about an hour. So they can join us there. Now, before we go. And I'm on YouTube as well, Ron. I just want to say that. I'm on YouTube.
Ron Meyers:Yeah, that's awesome.
Brian Ducharm:Yeah.
Ron Meyers:Before we go, will you pray for my listeners, please?
Brian Ducharm:Absolutely. Lord, we just thank you for another day. We thank you how good you are to us, Lord. We we love you and we bless you today, Father. And Father, I just ask that each person out there, Father, understands that you have an adventurous assignment for them, that you have a plan for their life, Lord God. And that you said that God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. So, Father, I'm asking that you would go and confirm your word in people's lives, Lord God, and give them a hunger for you so they can call out to the Lord, be saved today, but also just walk in their life with you, Father. Bless their families. I know there's people out here that need a healing touch, but Lord, you said in Psalm 103, you forgive our iniquities, you heal our diseases, and you deliver our life from destruction. So I just declare that over every single person that's listening to this podcast in the name of Jesus by the blood of Jesus. Lord, bless my brother Ron as he continues to share your word through his podcast and through his the things that he promotes, Father. Just continue to bless him and his family. We love you, Lord. Jesus' name. Amen.
