Get The Hell Out of Your Life
Jerry Caffey's Story: Don't Let The Shark Eat Your Trout
What if divine timing could transform your life's greatest challenges into opportunities for growth and faith? Join me, Ron Myers, as I share a personal story of losing a cherished job in Christian radio, only to find solace and new direction through the unexpected gift of a book that reminded me of God's perfect timing. In this compelling episode,
Our guest, Jerry Caffey, opens up about his battle with cancer, using the vivid metaphor of a shark consuming a trout to illustrate how fear can suddenly devour our dreams. Jerry's triumphant journey from a life-threatening diagnosis to victory offers a beacon of hope and an inspiring testament to the power of faith and resilience.
Together, Jerry and I explore the critical roles of faith, hope, and community support in overcoming personal and professional adversities. We reflect on the moments of grace and encouragement that have shaped our lives, emphasizing the importance of resting in God's grace and trusting Him with what we cannot control. As we discuss how these experiences of grace and hope can be shared and multiplied through community, bringing strength and healing to others, we also introduce a refreshing twist to your morning routine with Coffee News—a daily source of uplifting stories and motivational quotes. We wrap up with a heartfelt prayer for those seeking hope and encouragement, inspiring you to face life's challenges with renewed confidence.

It's time now to get the hell out of your life. A weekly broadcast with real people sharing real struggles and offering real hope. Today's show will encourage, inspire and empower you to face life's challenges with a bold confidence and renewed hope. Now let's join our host, ron Myers. The promoter.
Ron Meyers:Hello, my friends, it is so good to be with you today. I'm Ron Myers. I'm the host of this show. It is so good to be with you today. I'm Ron Myers. I'm the host of this show. It's called Get the Hell Out of your Life. And yes, yes, yes, we all need to keep the hell out of our life. God has a plan. There are places to go, people to see, things to do, but we can't do that with a lot of hell in our life, and that's why this show is all about faith, freedom and discovering who you were created to become. It's all about Jesus, my guests. They share their stories of what Jesus did in their life and they offer you encouragement, hope and faith. What better place to hear from real people sharing real struggles and real hope? My guest today helped me tremendously.
Ron Meyers:Years ago, I was terminated from a job I absolutely loved. I was involved in Christian radio for almost 10 years and one day they closed the doors. I was devastated, but I ran into Jerry at the gym. I told him the situation and he said, ron, I have something you need to read. He gave me a book and, yes, it was in his gym bag, and the first words I read. God is in the business of placing us in the right place at the right time. Even though it may seem like the wrong place and the wrong time, those were true words. God's divine timing changed my destiny. I'll talk more about divine destiny in the monologue, but first Jerry's story. It's a good story, in fact. He created the title Don't Let the Shark Eat the Trout. I know you're going to be encouraged and empowered and inspired by Jerry Caffey. Take a listen to our conversation.
Jerry Caffee:Well, we live on the Gulf Coast and I love the fish and a trout is a highly specialized fish that we love to fish for here on the coast. So the video I showed on YouTube was my son catching a beautiful trout and a big shark came up and snagged that trout and started eating it. So it was really a surprise event, you know. So I was just sharing about my life, about what happened with my interview, with cancer and my situation and how that came about. So that's that's the whole thesis of the shark eating your trout. You know, today we have people out there that have things. They're chasing hopes and dreams and then out of the blue comes a shark or fear, something that just consumes their hopes, and that's a little bit what it was about.
Ron Meyers:We can be doing everything just right in life, and that's a little bit what it was about. We can be doing everything just right in life, everything can be going well, and then, all of a sudden, a shark comes in to take away our hopes, our dream, or we get a bad diagnosis. Isn't that right?
Jerry Caffee:Oh, it's so true. I know a little bit of history here. In the 10th grade of high school, 40 years ago, I had a shoulder injury and it was pretty bad. I was in traction. I remember the surgeon telling me when you get to be your 50s, you're going to have to have shoulder surgery. And he was wrong. It was my 60s. So I've been living with shoulder pain for 40 years and you know, just kind of beat through it like everybody else. You don't want to complain, you want to be the bravado kind of guy who guts it out.
Jerry Caffee:And uh, and November 3rd I was scheduled to get a shoulder replacement. And uh, I had to get my blood labs drawn in my creatinine. Creatinine levels were high. I didn't think too much about it. I thought, well, maybe I'm just working out too hard or, um, eating too much protein. Come to find out I have a malignant tumor, or I had a malignant tumor, three pounds attached to my kidney. So my nephrologist, right before he, was going to clear me for shoulder surgery, which was, you know, I really wanted to get that shoulder surgery because it hurt so bad. I couldn't sleep at night. The shark in my life was cancer. And to sit there and hear a doctor tell you you've got cancer and it's malignant, and it's three pounds or you're going to lose your kidney, is pretty daunting.
Jerry Caffee:And you know, I just had to struggle. I had to lay in bed at night. Do I have three weeks left to live? Do I have three months? Do I have three years? Do I have 30 years? I didn't know.
Jerry Caffee:And your fear comes upon us like a wave. It's like a massive shark taking something you prized possession away. And I was in a battle and I like to say I was full of faith. But the reality was I struggled, you know, in the middle of the night, in the wee hours of the morning. That's when fear would come and I had to learn to push it back. And although the story has a good ending, I think many of you viewers out there are facing struggles and difficulty and trials and they don't know what to do. Well, the end of the story is I had a PET-CT scan done last week and they found no cancer, none at all. It was totally encased in the this, you know kidney comes wrapped in like a shrink wrap. And uh, the doctor, the nephrologist, told me, you know it was two millimeters away from my chest, the size of my whole body, and he said have you not been found out with? You know, it was pretty daunting, and now I see that, the thing that I hope for, the fear and the word cancer.
Jerry Caffee:It's just like a consuming shark and it was scaring the hell out of me to be honest with you, but I'd like to tell you on your show's something we want to face up straight up. You know that God is able to deliver us. He is able to be a provider. Many of our friends and coworkers go through things and now I have the ability to be a little more compassionate, have empathy, have understanding and just to walk with people. And, you know, have a tool in my pocket like a book for you. We always need to be looking for those God type moments, don't we?
Ron Meyers:Yeah, we sure do, jerry, and I'm so glad to hear that the cancer isn't there and now you're going to have some shoulder surgery. But you know, jerry, I think this year I've lost more friends and people this year than I think I have in a long time, whether it be cancer, it be COVID, it be surprise heart attacks, and a lot of these people are, you know, 40s and 50s and you know you think you're going to live to be 70 and 80, 90 years old, but the truth is that I think the Bible even tells us that we're not even promised a tomorrow. So, and when you are kind of aware that life is so fragile, you begin to intentionally live and look for opportunities of purpose.
Jerry Caffee:Well, so true, Ron. You know what you're talking about is living a life with purpose.
Jerry Caffee:And having a diagnosis like cancer actually has a benefit. There's something very startling and very striking when you realize you may only have three weeks left to live, but three months the reality is nobody gets out alive. Yeah, and I was at Starbucks today and I was going through the line and I guess I was on my phone and just to show you how God works in my life, sometimes I was on my phone, I wasn't paying attention and the person behind me was a little irate and they were blowing the horn and I realized it was my fault.
Ron Meyers:It was probably me blowing the horn. No, no, it probably was.
Jerry Caffee:It could be anybody, it could be me on a bad day, but you know that happens to us and I wanted to get aggravated and get mad. And I heard that quiet voice, because I was in front of them Go ahead and pay for their Starbucks, wow. And so I thought you know, know, I'm going to do that. So that was for me, that was a choice I made, uh, because you know life is short and, uh, we just have these everyday moments with God. We have to, we have to choose. You know, I've done a lot in my life. I make a lot of money, I've lost a lot of money, I've had a successful business, um, I've done mission trips all over the world, but I really think it comes down to living with purpose in the quiet moments, in the detailed moments, in the slow moments, in the fearful moments Sometimes a lot. When you walk into fear, you know and you trust God in the dark wee hours of the morning. That's maybe your greatest, the greatest moment of faith we have.
Ron Meyers:Yeah, yeah, so well put, I agree. And somebody out there right now, jerry, they're so glad they tuned in because that shark of fear has entered their life and it could be with a spouse with a job, with money, with finances, and you're the master fisherman. Now what do they do? How do they get rid of that shark in their life that wants to take away their dreams and hope?
Jerry Caffee:Yeah, scripture tells us, do not be afraid of sudden fear, nor be on the side of the wicked. And I have to catch myself, because when you get a sudden fear, your child is lost, your job is gone, your cancer is on you, it comes on and it robs us, it steals our joy. We're real people, we really deal with these things and we have to gather our wits and say, lord, I bring it to you. And you have to push back fear and choose faith. Sometimes what I have to do is just bathe myself in his promises. God is faithful, he's true, he's loving on his son, he cares for me, he loves me no matter what. He's my great resource, he has all the resources I need, he's my provider, nothing's impossible with him. And just on and on, and on and on, till my spirit catches up with my spirit. That's dealing with fear.
Ron Meyers:And then we do have to put on the faith of christ yeah, even though sometimes it may be a little dark in front of us, to hold on, have faith. There is light at the end of the tunnel and, yes, with god, it is going to be okay you know, I have one thing to that it's going to be okay.
Ron Meyers:It's what I've learned is it's going to be okay, and if it's not okay, it's still okay and it's important in this time, in this time in this world, that people really have that relationship with God. Jerry, I don't know how people that have no faith and no belief in God, I don't know how they get through each day.
Jerry Caffee:Well, we weren't made to be lone wolves. God designed the body of Christ. When I first posted about cancer, I had so many people reach out to me, people I hadn't heard from 40 and 50 years, and they ministered to me and I began to recognize the face of God through people. And you know, people often say because I love to fish and I love to be on the water and I love to wave fish, catch trout and redfish, A lot of my fishing buddies who are non-believers say, well, I don't need church, I don't need that, I don't have to be in church to be alone with God. I said but you need the body. We're not made to walk this world alone. What are you going to do when you get cancer? What are you going to do?
Jerry Caffee:when your baby's in a car wreck. What are you going to do when you hear horrible news? You need real hands, real people, real lives, real soothing words, and that's how God operates on us. He brings the body of Christ and I'm so thankful for it. Sometimes I've gone in the church with the hope of Lord.
Jerry Caffee:I just need to be encouraged Just someone to encourage me and often that happens More often than not it happens. But what I realize, what God often speaks to me, is look, I've got some people here who you need to encourage, and the encourager becomes encouraged when he encourages. And that's what you're doing, ron, on your radio show. That's why people are coming, that's why they're listening. They want hope. Hope is a powerful thing. A lot of people it's easy to have, not easy, but faith is something that some. It's possible to have faith and not have hope. Uh, just hope is a powerful, powerful, uh, emotion and feeling and the reality in our lives.
Ron Meyers:You know, Jerry, somebody asked me Ron, are you always so optimistic and you have hope? I mean, is it real or is it just a show for people? And I tell them, no, it's real, because I've been on the other end. I know what the alternative is when you don't have hope and when you don't have any optimism in life. But, Jerry, there was something that happened to me about probably about six years ago. It was the word grace and where I've always heard about grace. But something hit me one day that grace is nothing I can do for myself, but what God can do for me. I made a decision, whether it be a show that I'm doing or a project, that I turn it all over to God.
Jerry Caffee:God tells us not to labor, but there's one area he tells us to labor and he tells us to work hard at it, and it's to labor to enter into his rest.
Jerry Caffee:And I also thought that was odd, because why do we have to labor to enter into his rest? It's because we're not made that way. We're made to fix it ourselves. We want to take care of the problem, we want to fix the problem. And now, with the shoulder surgery and being laid up with cancer, I've got a multimillion-dollar business I'm running and I can't run it. I can't micromanage, I can't be a. On top of that, I got some cervical myopathy on my neck, which makes my hand from the surgery, makes my hand hard to write, so a lot of the things that I'm used to doing in my own flesh have been taken away from me.
Speaker 1:Wow.
Jerry Caffee:And you know it's a but it's a wonderful place of grace because what I can't do he can do. And even today, as we're talking, I agree with you, ron. There's some people listening today. They don't know what to do. They haven't experienced God's grace and his hope, and I believe today that's the purpose of this podcast is that God would issue forth hope.
Jerry Caffee:You know, ron, as you're talking, let me just speak this to you you know you're a wellspring of hope and encouragement, whether you hear it back or not. You'll never know, and that's how God operates. You know you'll never know the encouragement you give someone on the radio. You may never know it until you're in heaven. Matter of fact, I can forget good things I've done or good things you've done, but he says God is not unjust as to begin your work for the saints and that's so encouraging. You know you never know who's driving today, who's in there, a mother who's got screaming little kids around and just needs some hope, needs some rest.
Jerry Caffee:You know God's not a respecter of persons. He doesn't do something good for me and not do it for you. He doesn't take a prejudice over one person over the next. He is a God of the impossible. So if God healed me from cancer, he can heal you. If God can take me out of financial dilemma in a supernatural way, he can do it for you, and that's happened in my life. So you know, in scriptures Psalms says that he is the God of many deliverances, and I often thought it has an S on it. It's not like deliverance. He's the God of deliverances. Many of the afflictions are the righteous, but the Lord delivers them out of them all. We have a great God, don't we? Ron?
Ron Meyers:We have a great God. We have a great God and I want to thank you for taking time and visiting with me today and our listeners, hey.
Jerry Caffee:Ron. Yes sir, Can I do something? Can I pray for your viewers or your listeners today?
Ron Meyers:Yes, absolutely.
Jerry Caffee:Heavenly Father. I know that this message goes out to a lot of people, and right now as we pray.
Jerry Caffee:I know there's a mother who doesn't know what to do, there's a husband who doesn't know what to do, there's a child who's lost, there's finances that are beyond recompense, there's taxes due, there's cancer. There's a bad report, and we want to believe your report. I pray, father, that you would minister your great power, that you would bring hope, like a blanket of hope, around the hurting today, that you would wrap your loving arms so tenderly and tightly that there couldn't be any other explanation but the hand of God. Thank you that you've delivered me. You don't treat me special. You treat me special because I'm your son, but you're willing to give your gifts to anyone who's willing to seek you out. Father, we're so thankful. We're just like beggars who found bread and we want to share. I pray you'll minister to these people, father, and you'll love them and show them your love in a tangible way, whether it's fishing or promotion or whatever the vernacular they need to hear it in that you would speak to them today, father. Bless you, jesus, amen.

The Journey:Have you ever experienced a quote-unquote coincidence that seemed just too perfect to be random? My name is Mark and this is the Journey. I believe that God puts people and opportunities in our life on purpose, according to His plan for each of us. It's happened to me numerous times. I would be praying for an outcome that I desperately needed and then, interestingly, the right person or opportunity just appeared. The Bible suggests that these moments are not accidents but divine appointments. Throughout the Bible, we see one example after another where God orchestrated the events in the lives of His people.
The Journey:Think about young David's journey in the Bible. As a young shepherd, he was sent by his father, jesse, to bring food to his brothers at the battlefield 1 Samuel, chapter 17. It seemed like a simple errand, but in reality, god was positioning David for his greatest moment defeating the Philistine giant Goliath. What appeared to be chance was in fact, part of God's perfect plan to elevate David to his destiny. Then, later, god orchestrated the events of David's life to place him in the king's court, preparing him for future leadership. When we walk with God, nothing in our lives is random. He is always at work behind the scenes, weaving together circumstances for his purpose. What may seem like a coincidence to us is often God's way of guiding, teaching or blessing us. Remember that Psalm 37 reminds us the Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
Speaker 1:You're tired of how you're living. We'll change it. You don't like where you're headed? Rearrange it. You're sick of being let down and you want to turn your life around. If you want to start living right, Get the hell out of your life, Get the hell out of your life.
Ron Meyers:Get the hell out of your life. Welcome back listeners. You know there's a saying that God places us in the right place at the right time. But how often do we find ourselves questioning that? How often do we feel lost, trapped in what seems like the wrong place at the wrong time? I'm sure we've all been there, sitting in traffic when we're late for a meeting, or stuck in a job that feels like a dead end, watching life pass us by. At those moments it's easy to doubt, to think that we're on some path that leads nowhere. But what if? Just what if? This is exactly where we need to be?
Ron Meyers:I've come to believe that every experience, every setback, every delay is part of a greater plan, one that we may not understand at the moment. Think about it Every person we meet, every challenge we face, shapes us in ways we can't always see. It's in those uncomfortable situations that we learn resilience, empathy and strength. Perhaps God has placed us here to teach us something we didn't know we needed to learn, because it's all part of the grand scheme of things, and that is discovering your destiny. Imagine the times when you felt like giving up, yet somehow you found the strength to carry on.
Ron Meyers:Those moments of perseverance often lead to the most profound growth. It's in the struggle that we discover who we truly are. So the next time you find yourself questioning your circumstances, remember this. Sometimes the right place may feel wrong and the timing might seem off, but it's in those very moments that we are being prepared for something greater Trust that each twist and turn is a stepping stone leading you toward a purpose, a destiny that is uniquely yours. A purpose, a destiny that is uniquely yours. So today, I conclude with this Embrace the uncertainty of life, embrace the journey. Rest in the finished works of Jesus, because in the grand tapestry of life, every thread counts, even the ones that seem out of place. If you need something, seem out of God.
Speaker 1:It's not about earning points by being good. It ain't about some boring church, it's not about working your way to heaven. Finding God is not about following some group who claims to be the only way to God.
Jerry Caffee:It's not about being religious.
Speaker 1:It's not about religion. It's all about God's only son. It's all about Jesus.
The Journey:It's all about Jesus.
Speaker 1:It's about Jesus.
Speaker 5:Christ. Christ Jesus said I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the father, but by me.
Speaker 1:Well, someday, when I stand before God and he asks me why should I let you into heaven?
The Journey:All that's going to matter is if I knew Jesus or not, and that's what it's all about, Ron. We'll be back in a moment to wrap up today's conversation. We want to encourage you today with God's promise to you. It comes from the book of Jeremiah, chapter 29, verse 11. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and the future. That's God's promise to you when you choose to commit your plans and future to him. Now back to Ron.
Ron Meyers:Well, friends, my time is up and I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting with you today. I want to talk to the one person out there that is thinking that, well, life sucks, life is no fun. People use me, they abuse me, they lied to me and no one really cares. Well, let me tell you this Jesus cares and he wants to invite you to his desert island. That's right. It's just you and Jesus. There's no church, there's no podcast, there's no radio, there's no Bible. It's just you and Jesus coming into your heart, giving you new thoughts, new desires, erasing all your sin, giving you total forgiveness and everlasting life. And then, friends, you not only begin to thrive, you begin to smile again, you begin to have joy in your heart. It's only about Jesus. Only Jesus can give you what you're looking for. Not a building or a denomination, it's all about Jesus. Will you do me a favor and tell your friends?
Ron Meyers:Get the Hell Out of your Life is available on all podcast platforms. Well, I'll be back next week with another great episode of get the hell out of your life. In the meantime, remember this that I love you, jesus loves you, and when you give Jesus your heart, life not only gets good, it begins to make sense. Give the hell out, give the hell out, give the hell out of your life.
